SCHOOL PROFILE
ABOUT OUR SCHOOL
Lumsden High School is a grade 9-12 facility with full service programming. In addition to regular and French Immersion programming, LHS offers Dual Credit courses and Modified and Alternate credits.
A team approach is used to provide the needs of all students supported by our Student Support Services team. Our student counsellor works with students and staff to explore career and work opportunities, developing for the future.
Lumsden High has a strong, proud tradition of excellence in extra-curricular activities. Student Council, Band, Robot, Yeabook, Drama clubs and cultural exchanges are balanced by a vast array of athletics. Volleyball and Basketball teams compete in the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association. Football, Badminton, Curling, Cross-Country running, Golf, and Track and Field are options for perspective student athletes. All students at LHS have opportunities to participate in any extra-curricular activities.
CAREER & EDUCATIONAL GUIDANCE COUNSELLING
Career and Educational Counselling provides students with information about occupations, the post-secondary training required for those occupations, secondary course requirements for graduation, secondary course requirements for admission to various post-secondary training programs and scholarship information. See the Career Counseller for more information.
CHILD & FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER
The role of the staff in dealing with the personal/social problems faced by students is to help identify the problems. Collaboratively a plan is developed with the student and/or parent(s) to address the issues(s). The matter may be referred to an outside agency which may be better equipped to help address the issue(s). For more information see Ms. Drew.
COURSE WITHDRAWAL PROCESS (Grades 11 & 12)
Students in grade ten are not allowed to withdraw from courses of study during the year, since they are required to carry a full load. If a student in grade eleven or Twelve wishes to withdraw from a course of study after the change deadline, they will not be able to begin a replacement course until the start of the next semester. Please see the Career Counselor to complete course withdrawals. Grade 11 and 12 students who want to withdraw from a course are considered enrolled in a class until they have completed the Student Withdrawal Form with all signatures in place.
DISTANCE LEARNING COURSES
A number of high school courses are available via distance learning. A Complete list of distance learning courses available to access in school divisions outside of Prairie Valley School Division can be found at https://www.saskdlc.ca/
Contact Ms. Prystay-Thiessen, Career Counselor for information and guidelines for accessing distance learning courses. In addition, they can provide information about distance learning opportunities broadcast from Prairie Valley School Division schools.
FRENCH IMMERSION PROGRAMMING
Students who studied in French Immersion programming in their elementary school have the opportunity to continue their learning in a French Immersion learning program at Lumsden High School. The Ministry of Education requires students to earn a minimum of 12 of their 24 credits towards graduation in French Immersion instruction to receive recognition on their high school diploma.
MODIFIED/ALTERNATE/FUNCTIONALLY INTEGRATED COURSES
Students who have previously experienced challenges in a compulsory subject area are monitored by our Student Services Team (SST) in order to determine the programming that would be most beneficial to these students. This monitoring may result in a recommendation for in-depth assessment to best determine options and supports for students that are experiencing learning challenges. If assessments indicate that a student's learning needs are within the provincial parameters for modified programming the student, parents, SST coordinator and PVSD Student Services Team will collaborate and engage in a team effort to make the best programming decisions possible. Engaging in this process of assessment, consultation, and recommendations for modified programming all students at LHS have an opportunity to be successful in their learning experiences.
STUDENT SERVICES TEAM
A team of teachers and other support staff (including Educational Assistants, Child and Family Support Workers, Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech and Language Pathologists) is assigned to provide support services to students with a variety of individualized learning needs. When adaptations or special programming are needed, the grade 9-12 teachers and student services team will develop a learning plan in consultation with parents. This service is provided to ensure that all students get the maximum benefit out of their experiences at LHS.
LHS CLASS and BELL SCHEDULE
GENERAL INFORMATION AND GUIDELINES
ATTENDANCE & ABSENTEEISM
Note: All outlined procedures are guidelines only. Individual circumstances will dictate the steps taken for each student.
We expect that every student will strive for full attendance and punctuality in each class as attendance is a key factor to academic success. There are also legal considerations for those students under the age of 16. The Education Act states that children must attend school until they reach the age of sixteen years. Furthermore, the Act requires that every student (regardless of age) shall "attend school regularly and punctually".
The PVSD Student Attendance Policy (AP-3040) can be viewed on the PVSD website.
Definitions:
1. Compulsory School Age
The Education Act 1995, Chapter E-0.2, Part 1: Interpretation, states: "compulsory school age" means having attaining the age of seven years but not having attained the age of 16 years.
2. Local Attendance Counselor
The Education Act, 1995, Section 159(1) states: Every board of education shall appoint a person or designate a member of its staff to be the local attendance counselor for the school division. The Local Attendance Counselor for the Division is the Superintendent of School Services.
3. Chronic Absence
Refers to students missing an extended period of school when excused absences are taken into account. Chronic absence is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year (equivalent to 18 days out of a 180 day school year)
4. Chronic Truancy
Refers to students missing an extended period of school when unexcused absences are taken into account. Chronic truancy is defined as missing 10% or more of the school year (equivalent to 18 days out of a 180 day school year).
Students are responsible for arriving at class on time and appropriately equipped. To have the absence excused, it is the parents' responsibility to contact the school prior to or on the day of the actual absence. If an absence is to be “excused”, families must record the absence via Edsby or call/email the school directly. Failure to receive a notification from the parent on the day of the absence with result in the absence will be recorded as "unexcused." Failure to report the excused absence, for any class, results in contact of parents. Generally excusable reasons for absence are illness, a medical appointment, or a family emergency. Students 18 years of age or older may be responsible for their own attendance if they are no longer living with parent/guardian.
Attendance records are legal documents and can be called upon through the courts to provide evidence of where an individual was at a particular time on a particular date.
Lumsden High School Attendance Protocols
Note: All outlined procedures are guidelines only. Individual circumstances will dictate the steps taken for each student.
Absences: The student is not in the classroom or other designated instructional area and therefore not under the direct supervision of a teacher. An absence can be recorded as either “Excused” or “Unexcused” and can have a reason and comment attached to it.
• After 10 course absences, a designated advocate from the attendance team will reach out to the student/parents/guardians of the student. The student/parents/guardians will be informed that the student is at risk of being withdrawn from the class. Students/parents/guardians will receive notification in writing.
• After 15 course absences, a Student Attendance Intervention and Support Plan (APF-3040.1) will be developed by the administrator, student, parent/guardian, in consultation with the attendance team.
• A total of 20 absences will result in the loss of credit in the course unless there are extenuating circumstances that are recognized by school administration. Parents/guardians will receive notification in writing.
• Students who are in grades 9 or 10 may be placed in a scheduled tutorial or in an alternative placement. Attendance will be taken during this time.
• Students who are flagged as missing 30% of class time in any given month may be contacted by the attendance committee.
Extenuating circumstances: There may be extenuating circumstances that require a student to be away for a period either with prior knowledge or because of an emergent situation. If this is the case, there will be consideration of these circumstances when reviewing student attendance. Medical documentation may be requested.
Extended absences: Extended absences will need to be arranged in advance with administration and the attendance committee. It is not sufficient nor appropriate to only notify classroom teachers. Families need to be aware that absences greater than 10 school days cannot be accommodated by teachers. LHS does not offer distance learning. Attendance is paramount for learning and teachers need to first understand the learning needs of the student before assigning tasks and homework. Teachers may not be able to provide any information or assignments while students are away for an extended period. Upon the student’s return to school, they will meet with administration and the attendance committee to plan for their return to their classes.
Lates: The student arrived in the classroom or other designated instructional areas after the final bell has rung and was under the direct supervision of the teacher following that arrival. The student will be asked to sign in at the office where the time of arrival is also recorded.
Concerns with lates shall be addressed on a case-by-case basis and the emphasis shall be on maintaining student academic progress and developing acceptable behavioural habits.
•5 lates within a same course /month = ½ hour of time made up over lunch/parent notification
•10 cumulative lates/month = 1 hour of time made up over lunch/parent notification /suspend extra-curricular activities for one week
•15 cumulative lates/month = parent notification/suspend extra-curricular for one month/violation on parking pass
•Additional lates will result in a parent meeting/attendance contract with administration.
Students with any unexcused absences will be ineligible to participate in any extra-curricular activity on that day/evening. Any other absences will be reviewed by administration and individual teacher advisors/coaches. After review, student eligibility will be up to the discretion of the teacher/coach. It is vital to discuss schedule conflicts (appointments, etc.) with the coach/teacher advisor well in advance. If a student is deemed ineligible to participate for the entire day or game, students/parents/guardians will be notified.
Students writing final assessments are not to be away during those weeks. We encourage parents/families to honor the final exam schedule

ATHLETICS
Since physical education is part of the school program, all students scheduled for P.E. must attend properly equipped. All P.E. students must wear a T-shirt, gym shorts, gym socks and gym runners. Outdoor runners will not be allowed on the gym floor. Students are responsible for securing their valuables in their personal hallway locker during gym periods. A written note from the parent must be presented to the gym teacher/office for a student to be excused from a gym class due to medical issues. Any prolonged absence requires a doctor’s certificate.
Students should understand that participation in extra-curricular activities is a privilege, not a right. Students must maintain satisfactory standing and attendance in all my subject areas and remember that academics are a priority. Students must attend school for the full day to be eligible to participate in any activity during the day or evening. If absent, the office should be contacted in advance to discuss. If classroom behavior is not acceptable, students may be deemed ineligible to participate. The school administration and staff advisors will consult to determine possible consequences. Suspension from class automatically prohibits participation for the duration of the suspension. Students shall conduct themselves at all times in a manner which brings admiration and respect to themselves and Lumsden High School. Families should understand that Pay to Play and School fees are to be paid in full prior to participation in extra-curricular activities.

The computers may not be used to access inappropriate sites, to download music, or to play inappropriate games. Students who break these rules may have their computer access restricted.
- Printing material from the Internet can be very expensive. Students are encouraged to "copy, cut and paste" into a Word document to reduce the number of pages to be printed. If a student is not sure how long a document is or does not know how to "copy, cut and paste," he or she should ask a library staff member.
