Transportation

Transportation services operates over 170 bus routes that deliver approximately 4,500 students to school every day. Prairie Valley buses travel over 27,500 kms each day - that is more than 5,060,000 kms every year! Two bus maintenance shops manage the needs of the fleet - the Regina Shop operates in our facility at the Education Centre in the RM of Sherwood and a satellite shop is located in Grenfell. If you have questions about busing or transportation of students please call (306) 949-6566 or 1-866-488-4788. The phone number for the Grenfell Bus Shop is (306) 697-2441.

Through consultation with bus drivers and school administrators, it has been determined that all buses are currently at capacity and can no longer accommodate guest riders.
Only students registered for bus service will be provided transportation.

Transportation Policies

Prairie Valley School Division is committed to delivering safe and reliable transportation services to students. In doing so, we are guided by school division policies and procedures.

If you have concerns or questions regarding your child's transportation, please contact us at the phone numbers listed above.

School Bus Cancellations

Prairie Valley School Division is committed to delivering safe and reliable transportation services to students. All bus cancellation notices are posted to this website and school websites by 6:30 am.

In situations where the School Division operated bus is temporarily unable to run the regular route due to mechanical problems or lack of availability of a driver, parents will need to arrange transportation to and from school.

If the bus is unavailable for three or more consecutive days, parents are eligible for a per-kilometre allowance at approved rates by completing and submitting APF-8220.2: Parent Transportation in Lieu of Busing to the Supervisor of Transportation.  It is important to note that this allowance does not apply to days when bus service is cancelled due to inclement weather.

Bus Cancellations Due to Inclement Weather

When bus services are cancelled in the morning due to inclement weather, they are expected to run in the afternoon. If the bus will not run in the afternoon, parents will be notified by 1pm.

Due to the geographic size of Prairie Valley School Division, bus services may vary from location to location when temperatures begin to drop. To ensure student safety, several factors are considered in determining bus cancellations:
  • severe cold weather temperatures of -40 Celsius or colder without a wind chill factor, as read at 6:10 a.m. from the Environment Canada weather report
  • severe cold weather temperatures of -45 Celsius or colder with a wind chill factor, as read at 6:10 a.m. from the Environment Canada weather report
  • severely limited visibility
  • unsafe or extremely adverse road conditions caused by ice or drifting snow.
Please note: The transportation department monitors temperatures at each of the three Environment Canada weather towers located within Prairie Valley School Division. This means, due to weather, services could be cancelled in one tower area while still running in another. Please see below for the tower area in your location.

Division Wide Cancellations

If any of the above criteria are met throughout the whole Division, a Division-wide cancellation will be made. Families will be notified of Division-wide cancellations by telephone, by listening to local radio stations, and by checking this website or the school website.

If weather conditions do not meet the above criteria for a Division-wide cancellation, bus service may be cancelled by individual bus drivers due to severely limited visibility, adverse road conditions or mechanical issues with the bus.

The School Division respects the right of parents or guardians to keep their children home during severe weather conditions, or when, in their opinion, the safety of their children may be in jeopardy.

For more detailed information, view the Bus Service Cancellation - Inclement Weather Procedure.
